4月19日 Broadway Celtic - Match Round-UpSunday 9th April
Home Game. Vale Farm
Woodbridge 0 - 2 Broadway Celtic
For the third week running, Woodbridge were able to field a strong side with a good bench to boot. This is one of the games that Woodbridge always look forward to, not that we ever win, but because we always play well and enjoy ourselves.
The game started at a good pace, seeing two of Broadways players booked almost straight away and not because of any tackles (Quiney cant help chatting to refs in his loud voice). Unfortuantely for us, he ended up a little fired up and due to slow reactions in the defence, he was able to stroll through and slot the ball into our net. This was especially harsh as only minutes before, our Jason had managed to beat Broadways offside trap only for his shot to be fingertipped onto the crossbar by an outstanding save from their keeper.
The score line remained 1 nil to Broadway for most of the game which saw both sides miss gilt edged chances. William in our goal was having another great game, and whilst not called into action often, was always ready when required.
5 minutes from time with Woodbridge gaining momentum, we were hit with a sucker blow as a delfection of a defender found itself at the feet of Broadways substitute striker who calmly slotted the ball in for 2 nil.
This was a great game that could of gone either way
4月13日 John Lewis - Match Round-upSunday 2nd April
Home Game. Vale Farm
Woodbridge 3 - 3 John Lewis
3 nil down just before halftime and things looked dire for Woodbridge, who had up to this point had hit a bit of form. But with Woodbridges new found grit a goal was found just before the whistle.
Second half found our winger charge down the left but with no one supporting a speculative shot flew in over the keeper from near 30 yards. As the teams prepared to kick-off, to our amazment the referee asked why a goal kick wasnt being taken. Some how his position in the centre of the pitch didnt allow him a clear view of the goal (its like standing in the middle lane of the M25 at rush hour and not seeing any cars doh!) In all seriousness, it was a spectactualr goal that he had no right to score, and if I was refereeing the game I would have found it had to believe that it went in.
So still 3-1 down, but now fired up, Woodbridge went into overdrive and managed to score two quick goals. Unfortuantely we were unable to find another goal and to our dismay, somehow managed to draw a game in which we out scored our opponents.
MOM - Darren. Manager for the day
Highgate Albion - Match Round-upSunday 19th March
Home Game. Vale Farm
Woodbide 3 - 1 Highgate Albion
Probably the shock of the season as full strength Woodbridge side tore through a strong Highgate team to record their first win of the season.
Last weeks goal hero Jason added to his tally with a well taken goal and then set up our new left winger for an easy tap-in.
Our goal shy team has now hit 6 goals in 2 games, but most noticable was how little work our goalkeeper had to do with the defence looking solid and the whole team working as a unit.
MOM - goes to the whole team for a job well done
Dalys - Match Round-upSunday 12th March
Away Game. Northwick Park
Dalys 8 - 3 Woodbridge
Dont be fooled by the scoreline as this game was a lot closer than it sounds. The game also saw the keeper debut of William, who had been playing on our left wing for most of the season.
This game also had the debut of 3 new players that had been signed earlier in the season but unable to play until now.
MOM - William in goal / Jason up front who scored on his debut N.L.O - Match Round-upSunday 5th March
Home Game. Vale Farm
Woodbridge 0 - 7 North London
MOM - Doug Strong. For keeping the swearing down to a minimum. 2月21日 John Lewis - Match Round-upCongrats to team for going their second week without defeat, and a kick up the ass for the league who once again failed to have a referee available for game.
Obviously we didn't play again.....but then it was raining...a bit.
As for the lack of a referee (this is the fifth time this season) you could say the league were doing sweet F.A (hope you enjoyed that play on words as much as I did) 2月15日 Broadway Celtic - Match Round-upDoh! game was called of due to (apparent) bad weather, even though three other games were already playing on the pitches next to us?
Which is a pity as it was probably are best turn out of players this season.
On a plus note we didn't lose. 2月8日 Hanwell Celtic Match Report - AwayWoodbridge Formation 4-5-1
Team
GK Tomasz Sobon (90mins) LB Mark Reeves (70mins) CB Oliver Reeves Cpt (90mins) CD Chris Abbott (90mins) RB Michael Reeney MOM (90mins) LW Mark Duggan (90mins) CM Paul Duggan (90mins) CM Darren Price (90mins) CM Kevin Abbott (90mins) RW Elliot Portifield (85mins) FW Lewis Bathurst (90mins) Sub John Bullock (20mins)
This match was due to kick off at 11.00am Sunday morning, but Hanwell asked if they could re-schedule the game for a 12.30 start due to another team playing on their pitch. We kindly accepted the bribe of free sarnies after the game, and agreed to their terms.
Unfortunately the early game overran by an hour due to the referee not playing 30mins each half as agreed, but the full game. This did not sit well when we were then informed that he would also be the ref for our game, and that he had close ties to Hanwell! But being a team who often face a dilemma or two (plus we’d already been sitting around for the best part of 2 hours) we agreed to play the game.
1.30pm Kick-off…..finally Somehow, even after a one hour delay we managed to start with only 10 players, and without pointing anyone out -ELLIOT PORTIFIELD- (technically bold writing isn’t pointing…you need a finger for that) managed to slot himself into the right midfield spot.
Today marked the debut of our new keeper Tom *cough* who soon found out that life in the Woodbridge goal is never boring. Now he had some pretty big shoes to fill as the keeper of our previous 2 games only conceded 19 goals (yeah it was me, hence no match reports…I blame the defence). Tom acquitted himself well and was soon showing both teams how good a shot stopper he was. He also showed us how bad at goal kicks he was, as this duty fell to the centre backs. However as the game went on Toms confidence grew, and the next goal kick he took sailed over our heads and into the oppositions half (que gasps from all the outfield players who had never witnessed such a feat before!!!)
Half time and the score remained 0-0 with both teams carving out chances but failing to capitalise. As the game went on tempers began to fray and it wasn’t long before challenges became a little shall we say enthusiastic. Horror struck in the 70 minute when a shot was spilt by are keeper, and with the defence a little slow to react we found ourselves one nil down, and with a player hobbling of the pitch. Mark Reeves was replaced with Woodbridge veteran John Bullock who was soon stuck in, making many great challenges and interceptions.
Chances for Woodbridge went begging with Lewis unable to keep his footing, and several great saves from the oppositions keeper. In the 85min any chance for a revival was ended when a speculative high shot took a nasty bounce and looped over our poor stranded keeper.
Tempers frayed again when a poor challenge on Kevin Abbott saw him react badly (hand bags at dawn stylee) which saw both teams squaring up to each other. However the referee saw sense and a more or less well tempered game ended without either team receiving a card.
Final Score 0-2 to Hanwell Celtic, but the best performance from Woodbridge this season.
Man of the Match - Michael Reeney for a superb game at right back.
10月16日 Willesden Legionaire V Woodbridge Rovers FCSunday 16th October
Venue: The Rectory Park
Kick Off: 10:30am
Woodbridge Rovers Team: Michael Park, Nunzio Moffa, Nick Jarrett, Oliver Reeves, Eliot Connor, Darren Price, Kevin Abbott, Emlyn Foody, Stephen Price and Mark Duggan.
Subs:Mark Reeves, John Bullock
Willesden Legionaire 4-3 Woodbridge Rovers FC
Willesden started the game the better team and were in complete control for the first 10 minutes with some lovely slick passing. Woodbridge Rovers with a couple of more players returning to the first team line up then began to force their way into this contest showing good determination with a few tackles and a couple of moves of their own. The first goal of the game however went to Legionaire. A tackle won by one Legionaire forward inside the Woodbridge half resulted in a through ball to his strike partner who crisply finished (even if he did look 5 yards offside). Woodbridge remained well in the game with the back line playing particularly well. Willesden continued to play inside the Woodbridge half but, it was the away side who created the best 2 chances before half-time. Firstly Mark Duggan flicked on a forward ball and a slip by the centre half presented Darren Price with a great chance but he unluckily shot wide. Next Kevin Abbott mugged the opposing keeper of the ball (I think he also got his keys and his wallet) turned and shot but saw his effort just go over the bar.
Half-Time 1-0
The Second half started as the first ended with Legionaire grabing most of the possesion. However with Woodbridge Rovers playing with good shape and discipline Willesden were finding it difficult to create good chances. However they soon made it 2-0 when their blonde haired striker recieved a throw in at the corner of the 18 yard box, hooked the ball over his head to see it fly into the far corner of the net (a rather lucky strike to say the least). Rovers never dropped their heads and kept on battling and they were soon rewarded when a clearance from the Legionaire defence fell at the feet of Oliver Reeves. "Olly" unleashed a 30 yard scorcher that rocketed in off the underside of the crossbar (not exactly top corner but we were not complaining). For the next 10 minutes Woodbridge piled on some pressure but were hit with a sucker punch when Legionaire spread the ball out to the right side of Rovers penalty box and Willesden's right winger finished with bullet into the top corner. Woodbridge Rovers soon made it 3-2 from a free kick just inside the Willesden half. Moffa spotted a good run from Emlyn and placed his long ball with accuracy onto Emlyn's head who calmly flicked his header into the bottom left corner of the net. Their was a real belief in the Rovers side that they could get something from the game and Mark Duggan was denied a deserved goal when his effort from the edge of the box was tipped round the post for a corner. Soon after Woodbridge equalised. Stephen Price scored with a lovely 25 yard grasscutting free-kick that nestled just inside the right post. Woodbridge were to suffer again with last minute heartbreak though. After clearing a corner Legionaire raced up the other end of the pitch and created 3 or 4 shooting opportunities within seconds and after a series of last ditch tackles and blocks they finally found the bottom right hand corner of the net with a neat placed shot from the edge of the area. Another defeat for Woodbridge Rovers but a lot of positives to be taken from the game and things are surely looking up for the rest of the season.
9月25日 Match ReportBroadway Celtic II 8-2 Woodbridge Rovers
The sun was shining, the pitches amaculate, the players......well they all looked like they'd been pulled through a bush backwards. However as this was our first competitive game of the season, and with our 100% unbeaten pre-season (we didn't bother with a pre-season this year) we were filled with confidence.
Unfortunately this was mis-placed confidence soon realised when only 9 players turned up. At one point we seriously considered kitting up our manager, but as he's floating around his 60's we thought better of it.
Young Kevin Abbott kindly let us know an hour before kick-off that his car had blown up so he wouldn't be able to make it, and four other players are still missing without a trace.
Lewis against his better judgement rose up from his drunken stupour and managed to get his ass down to the pitch only missing 5 minutes of the game.
THE MATCH - Kick-off 11.00am
We burst from the traps early on, surging relentlessly towards the oppositions goal. Its a pity because we didn't have kick-off, so whilst we were all racing towards the oppositions end they were plonking the ball in the back of our net 40 seconds after kick-off.
Plan B
After the dreadful disater that was Plan A, are gallant leader of the day Emlyn Foody (Nigel Wood was on a charity walk, apparently we thought we were to and forgot to play) gave new instructions to the defence.
"STOP FOOKING AROUND YOU C*NTS etc, etc......."
We steadied the ship and launched another attack at their goal (this time with the ball in tow) Our first corner was headed on from the centre spot where it landed on Ollie's foot who unleashed a savage first time volley into the direction of the bottom right of the net. Unluckily there keeper pulled of probably the save of the season and palmed the effort around the corner post. The resulting corner led to nothing.
With the ground extremly dry we were suffering greatly from the bounce of the ball which kept looping over our defence. This inevitably led to Broadways second goal of the match. The ball was kicked from the halfway line and seemed to hang in the air forever until it landed on poor Ollie's head and leaving our keeper stranded (I'd say keep your chin up Ollie, but thats what lead to your own goal)
Broadways 3rd goal came about much the same way as the second. A bad bounce landing straight on their strikers foot and finding its way into the top corner leaving our poor keeper clutching at thin air again.
Up to this point the referee's descisions had all been in the oppositions favour so just before half time he decided it was our turn. Lewis's super long throw into the box was flicked on by Emlyn to Darren Price who brilliantly controlled the ball with his arm and lashed in our first goal of the game. Furious players surrounded the refferee to no avail, the goal stood. Second Half
More of the same from Broadway, ball over the top and within 15 minutes of the restart we were 5 - 1 down. This was the cue for Matt Gasgoigne to do a disappearing act on us (his wife's giving birth in 6 weeks and was going for a check up so I suppose we'll let him get away with just this once) Down to 9 players we decided that losing was inevitable but we were going to go down fighting. Chris Abbott won the ball to defence and passed to Mark Duggan on the halfway line who brillently hooked a pass over the top of Broadways right back (with the outside of his boot)releasing Lewis. Lewis charged down the left wing, skinned to defenders, cut the ball back across the 18 yard line for the on coming run of Mark Duggan, who smashed the ball along the ground and off the inside of the upright.
For 10 more minutes we caused Broadway all sorts of trouble. In response they brought on 3 subs (not really fair, they had more subs than we had players!), with fresh legs they easily picked off what was left of our tired reargaurd scoring a further 3 goals.
However there were many positives to be taken out of the game and with 5 players to return to the side for next weeks away game, we should finally be able to show what we can do.
